Access denied, Your organization does not allow external forwarding – M365

  • by

When a user want to forward emails to an external mail domain, there might be extra settings you need to change in order to allow this. Because by default this is blocked by a policy. Which, in my opinion, is a good thing. But your organization might allow this for whatever reason.

When you make the change to forward emails to an external email address and send a test email, you might receive a message with the following content.

A security policy is blocking this. To change this you need to login to https://security.microsoft.com/antispam. On this page you probably see these policies.

Click on the Anti-spam outbound policy (Default). And then more settings will appear.

Click on the Edit protection settings at the bottom. There you will see some extra settings like you see in the next image.

Change the setting in the dropdown menu to On – Forwarding is enabled.

It might take a 5 to 30 minutes before the policy change is active. Test it by sending an email again and now the forward should work. Let me know if it doesn’t

extra note:
You might find other internet resources about this subject that point to https://protection.office.com/antispam. This was the old resource to make these changes. It is now replaced by https://security.microsoft.com/antispam
